Thailand has been Buddhist since before the birth of Christ. Buddhism is widely practiced in Thailand — both as a religion but even more importantly as a way of life.
Buddhism is not one coherent religion but rather an amalgamation of several religious traditions, where the individual and his or her integrity and choices are emphasised. Theravada is the name of the type of Buddhism following in Thailand, practiced by some 95 per cent of the population.
As discussed under the section on Thai Culture, Buddhism is rather tightly integrated in the Thai way of life. This largely explains why virtually every Thai village has at least one temple and why so comparatively many Thais are vegetarians — as well as why numerous Thai men become monks during at least parts of their lives.
